Free In Zurich – The Zurich Toy Museum

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Zurich is an expensive city where everything seems to cost something to enter. But unknown to the average traveler, there are things to do in this city that are absolutely free. One of the is the Zurich Toy Museum. Video of the Zurich Toy Museum.
The Zurich Toy Museum has toys from the 18th to the 20th Century. What struck me was the intricacy of the toy trains and other mechanical devices. It is as if the took a full scale train and shrunk it. These toys actually work on the same power source as the full size locomotive. There are also dolls and stuffed animals on display. The most interesting is the Teddy Bear that was sold when Teddy Roosevelt ran for office.
Located in downtown Zurich, the museum is easy to get to and worth a look. This museum may even bring back memories of your own childhood. Friday, March 20th, 2009

Rome has several Restaurants that are very successful at trapping unsuspecting tourists to overpaying. One of their tactics is to put wine, appetizers, and even bread at your table as soon as you sit down without even asking you. This practice leads the tourist to believe the food is complimentary until the bill arrives and they have to pay for the bread that was placed on thier table.

Other Restaurants, like Artu behide the Church of Santa Maria, actually give out free food at their Happy Hour. The spread is extensive with olives, pasta, and antipasta. People have been know to eat at this Happy Hour and not have to go to dinner afterwards. This is a rare find and something that can save your travel budget. Video of Artu

So if you happen the be in the city of Rome, Check out Artu. And if you do plan to go to  Happy Hour at Artu, Plan to  get there when it starts, at 7:00 PM. If you are late, you will miss some great food that is Free.

Milan Castle and the Secret to Free Museums

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Milan Castle Video This Castle is over seven centuries old. It was one of the most “sumptuous courts of all Europe. It then became an army barracks during foreign occupation by first the Spanish, then the Austrians, the French, and then the Austrians again. In the 19th century, a united Italy restored the castle to what it once was. They even restored the church which was used by the occupiers as a stable. Ironic since there is a statue of an Austrian Saint in the Courtyard.

Besides the free castle, there are twelve museum housed in the building. They are;

Museum of Ancient Art

Egyptian Museums

Picture Gallery

Museum of Prehistory

Museum of Decorative Arts

Museum of Musical Instruments

Furniture Museum

Achille Bertarelli Prints Collection

Photographic Archives

Archaeological and Numismatic Library Office

Historical Archive and Trivulziana Library

Art Library and Vinciana Collection

The cost is 3 Euro to enter all of them for a day. But if that seems too expensive, just wait until 4:30PM when the museums are FREE.
