Go Island hopping in Athens

Just because you’re in Athens doesn’t mean you have only tour the city. Athens is not only close to other islands with great history, it has great transportation system to take you there. Read on to learn how to go island hopping in Athens.

The first step is to get to the port to take the ferry which is at Piraeus. The fastest and cheapest way I found is to to take the metro to Piraeus, Green Line, or line 1.

The best way to use the Metro is to buy the 90 minute ticket. Less than half the all day. With how FAA the Metro in Greece is, you can get anywhere in less than 90 minutes. It is much more reasonable to get two 90 minute than getting all day.

The Piraeus Train Station

When you get to Piraeus, walk out of the train station and right to the pier. The ferry system is very easy to use and gives you 2 choices, fast and slow.

The fast choice is the high speed boat. On a trip to Aegina, it’s twice as fast but it comes at a price. It’s a little over 60% more than the slower boat. This is a great option if you want to squeeze a lot of touring into your visit.

The Port of Piraeus

The other option is the slower boat which is half as fast but cheaper. On a trip to Aegina, it will take 1 hour and 20 minutes as opposed to 45 minutes. This is a good option for larger families or those on a budget.

Both ships have great interiors that are very clean and comfortable. There is clean bathrooms available which is great if you want to change into or out of your island wear. There is even a cafe if you need a snack.

Even though Athens is a great city with plenty of attractions to see, it is also a great base camp for day trips. The Metro and ferry system make it to explore more of Greece. So what are you waiting for, go island hopping in Athens!

Free Days at the MCA Chicago

What do you do if you are an Art lover in Chicago on a rainy day and your funds are running low? Want to meet with artist at a World-famous Art Museum and have them explain their cutting-edge work? Want to introduce yourself or your kids to the latest art and not spend a lot, if any, money? Then you should check out the Free Days at the MCA Chicago!

Free Days at the MCA Chicago

I just got back from a free great deal in Chicago, the Free Days at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago. Every Tuesday the MCA is free for Illinois residents. Also, it is open late, so there is more time to enjoy all they have to offer.

The museum itself has four floors dedicated to art that you would not normally see anywhere else. It’s collection changes regularly so if you visited last year, the artists may be all new. This keeps the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago fresh and unique. It’s like a gallery of up-and-coming artists, only much, much bigger. But that’s not all the MCA Chicago provides for visitors.

Other Free Programs at the MCA

Besides the Free Days, every second Saturday of the Month from 11am to 3pm, the MCA hosts its Family Days. This program is designed and led by Chicago artists for kids and their grownups. “Enjoy FREE admission while taking part in artistic activities and performances.”

And if you are under 18, the MCA is free all year long. This is a great opportunity for young people to expose themselves to see the boundaries of Art. Maybe it can inspire young artists of the possibilities.

So if you happen to be in Chicago and like art, this is the place to go for FREE. The extra money you save you can use to more of Chicago’s great attractions.

Imprenta Municipal

A 10 minute walk South from Plaza Del Sol. It is a free museum dedicated to The history of Printing and Graphic Arts. On the first floor, there are several printing presses going back the when making books relied on strong men working huge vise machines, to mechanical beasts that cranked out hundreds of color images for magazines without an ink jet printer.

Also you will find the science and mechanics of creating the type settings that created letters as well as words. Getting images on paper before took a great deal of ingenuity and creating multi-color images took even more. Finding out how humans did it mechanically is a fascinating process you will find out here.

On the second floor you will find temporary exhibits dedicated to comic books, cartoons, and current animation. The history of the progression from paper comics to the modern movies is explained and is very interesting.

The museum is free and open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 2pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm. If you are into mechanical devices and fascinated on how things work, this is for you. A non Spanish treat you were not expecting to find in Madrid.
