Trapped in Mumbia – In Their Own Words

March 28th, 2009

One of our own was trapped in Mumbia and took the time to write down his experience just before he left the country. Even though it is short, it gives a pretty good description of his harrowing experience. I don’t normally put things up like this, but in these unique times, it is best we stay informed of what we may experience. Like it or not, there are people who have issues with citizens of the free world, especially Americans.

This is why we have an “Emergency” section that displays the phone number and location of the Embassy, Police, and Fire Brigade on most of our cities on the “City” page. Just as you brief your crews on where to meet if there is an emergency on your layover, you should know where to find safety in any situation that may arise, no matter where you stay.

“It is now 3:15 am EST and I am near the Mumbai airport. I should be getting
on a plane in the next several hours to come home. . . with nothing but the
clothes on my back. I believe the fire in the Taj took all my belongings,
only a few of which were precious to me. I write notes to my girls and keep
them in my flight case, and they may or may … Read Morenot be recovered
later. Still too “hot” in more than one way to think about retrieving any
items. No passport, no uniform no airline ID, no computer, (this one is
borrowed),no suitcase, no flight case, but I am thankful. . .for the gift of
being ab le to come home and hug my girls. My daughters don’t really know
what happened and I prefer it that way, so please use discretion if talking
to them. I heard a lot of explosions, and gunfire, and had eaten at
Leopold’s a few hours earlier. The other First officer had been in his room
when the trouble broke out. He hunkered down for a while until the fire got
too close, then made a break for it.

Fortunately all xxx crews are accounted for and xxx has done a very good
job communicating with us and assisting from headquarters. I pretty much hid
for several hours in a cheap little hotel so as to stay out of sight (big
white guy draws attention) as I was not sure the streets were safe. At any
rate, I am coming home with no bags to check… Read More. Pray that India
and Pakistan doesn’t get violent in the next several hours at least. Also
pray for the hostages in the TAJ, as well as a couple xxx pilots still
unaccounted for that were staying at the Oberoy. That’s all for now. This is
pretty surreal!”

Free In Zurich – The Zurich Toy Museum

March 27th, 2009

Zurich is an expensive city where everything seems to cost something to enter. But unknown to the average traveler, there are things to do in this city that are absolutely free. One of the is the Zurich Toy Museum. Video of the Zurich Toy Museum.
The Zurich Toy Museum has toys from the 18th to the 20th Century. What struck me was the intricacy of the toy trains and other mechanical devices. It is as if the took a full scale train and shrunk it. These toys actually work on the same power source as the full size locomotive. There are also dolls and stuffed animals on display. The most interesting is the Teddy Bear that was sold when Teddy Roosevelt ran for office.
Located in downtown Zurich, the museum is easy to get to and worth a look. This museum may even bring back memories of your own childhood. To see more details on this museum as well as other free things to do in Zurich, go to the Zurich Section of NonRevWebsite.com . To see more free thing from around the world, go to NonRevWebsite.com

Lessons from Mumbia – How to Keep Terrorists Away

March 26th, 2009

We have just received some new information about the Terrorist Plot in Mumbai. It appears that the Terrorists could not go to each room looking for victims at the hotel because there where thousands of rooms and they were a small force. Their solution was to knock on the doors that had a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the doorknob.

A solution to this problem is to call room service and tell them not to disturb you. Keep the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign off you door. Take advise from people who learned this lesson the hard way.

Please pass this on to all you know. It may save their life. If you would like more travel tips from expert travelers, go to the Road Warrior section on NonRevWebsite.com

Free Food in Rome

March 20th, 2009

Rome has several Restaurants that are very successful at trapping unsuspecting tourists to overpaying. One of their tactics is to put wine, appetizers, and even bread at your table as soon as you sit down without even asking you. This practice leads the tourist to believe the food is complimentary until the bill arrives and they have to pay for the bread that was placed on thier table.

Other Restaurants, like Artu behide the Church of Santa Maria, actually give out free food at their Happy Hour. The spread is extensive with olives, pasta, and antipasta. People have been know to eat at this Happy Hour and not have to go to dinner afterwards. This is a rare find and something that can save your travel budget. Video of Artu

In Milan, the have a “Happy Hour,” but unlike happy hour in America, they don’t give half price drink specials. Instead they give out appetizers like nuts and potato chips. Some places though, put out huge spreads consisting grilled vegetables, cheeses, pasta, and pizza. The Canal district has several Happy Hours and one in particular, Ripa Kitchen & Bar, Has a great assortment of FREE FOOD, all you have to do is pay for a drink. Milan Castle and the Secret to Free Museums

March 12th, 2009

Milan Castle Video This Castle is over seven centuries old. It was one of the most “sumptuous courts of all Europe. It then became an army barracks during foreign occupation by first the Spanish, then the Austrians, the French, and then the Austrians again. In the 19th century, a united Italy restored the castle to what it once was. They even restored the church which was used by the occupiers as a stable. Ironic since there is a statue of an Austrian Saint in the Courtyard.

Besides the free castle, there are twelve museum housed in the building. They are;

Museum of Ancient Art

Egyptian Museums

Picture Gallery

Museum of Prehistory

Museum of Decorative Arts

Museum of Musical Instruments

Furniture Museum

Achille Bertarelli Prints Collection

Photographic Archives

Archaeological and Numismatic Library Office

Historical Archive and Trivulziana Library

Art Library and Vinciana Collection

The cost is 3 Euro to enter all of them for a day. But if that seems too expensive, just wait until 4:30PM when the museums are FREE. If your travel city is Milan, this is one of the best deals around. Your choice of 12 museums, all for free! Find all 12 Free Museums and Castle here. Cafe Spiaggia and Restaurant Week

March 4th, 2009

Today my wife and I went to one of the restaurants featured in Restaurant Week, Café Spiaggia which claims it has the best Gnocchi in Chicago. For $22 a person we had an salad, entrée, and a dessert. The Entrée was a pasta dish and the dessert was either gelato or sorbet. I have to admit, this pasta reminded me of Rome it was so good. Our waiter, who was more like the V-P of Marketing, was unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable. As a matter of fact, when you go there, ask for Greg.
They gave us a table by the window that was very intimate and had great view of Michigan Avenue. These tables are discreet enough that you can eat by yourself without being too obvious.

All in all this was an excellent experience. Would we go here if there wasn’t a special fixed menu, as a matter of fact we were talking about it. Restaurant Week  just pushed off top dead center to go. I think Restaurant Week, the last week in February, is a great motivating force to get people out to experience great restaurants and make them realize how many amazing restaurants we have.

Pleasure or Pork

March 3rd, 2009

As a resident of Chicago working in Atlanta, I get asked about the Earmarked Project that caused an uproar. Remember last year when a Presidential Candidate talked about the $3 Million dollar Pork Barrel overhead projector?

Now you can see that overhead projector for free. That’s Right, the Adler Planetarium has free days, or as they call them Discount Days. For the General Public that means a savings of $10.
Besides viewing Chicago’s most famous Pork Project, there are several great exhibits on my favorite subject, Travel. In this case it is Space Travel and the destination is the Moon. The exhibit titled Shoot for the Moon includes “exciting stories of space exploration and America’s bold plans to return to the Moon.” It’s devided into two parts. The first, A Journey with Jim Lovell, tells the history of space travel while Mission Moon describes our future plans to returning and colonizing the moon. There is even an interactive section on what space travel will be like for young astronauts.
